Recognise and celebrate those already involved: local people have been doing this much longer than your programme

Make the most of community champions – those who are already involved and active within the community. These people can often be very well known within the community, but that’s not always the case, and so finding out who they are and then getting them on board is an important process. They are also usually well connected, have good local networks, and make excellent ambassadors and so their existing connections will help build social capital, and encourage neighbourliness amongst local residents.

What’s also important is that these people are both recognised and rewarded for their contribution. It will not only help drive and encourage those who are very much involved in their community, but also encourage and show others what they can do.

The Pride in Our People awards in EC1 celebrated and rewarded the unsung heroes of the area – recognising those members of the community who work hard to make a difference in their local area. The NDC invested in a high quality event; a local celebrity was invited to present the awards and sponsorship was provided from local organisations. Nominees, their families and local representatives were invited to the event including a 3 course meal and entertainment. The quality helped demonstrate a sense of appreciation, but also to generate wellbeing and enthusiasm, creating a sense of civic pride and inspiring local people to get involved. Local residents were also recruited to help organise the event.
